Solution

The correct option is D S Q P R
The first statement in the sequence should be the one that best connects with S1. It must be a continuation or extension of S1.
S is first in the sequence: S1 starts by saying that dinner had been served and the subject's daughter laid out the plates. S continues by saying that the dinner was bread and cheese-a simple subsistence at the end of a not-so-simple life.
S is followed by Q: Q tells us what happens next. It says that after the dinner was served, he sat down gruffly, not saying a word to her.
Q is followed by P: P adds a point to the topic. It starts talking about the daughter. It says that she was just a child of 14 and was too young and simple to know and understand.
P is followed by R: R continues P's point. It says that she had already had her meal and was standing by the subject's side, not knowing what to do. S6 goes on to say that she then left silently to retire for the night and it was as if she had never been there.
Thus, the correct sequence is S Q P R. Hence, D is the correct option.
