One of the hydrogen atoms in the methane has been replaced by a chlorine atom, so this is a substitution reaction.(free radical)

The chain is initiated (started) by UV light breaking a chlorine molecule into free radicals.

$C H_{4} + C l_{2} h ν - \to C H_{3} C l + H C l$

Hence it requires diffused sunlight reaction to be completed.
