Question

The following table shows the electronic configuration of the elements W,X,Y,Z :
Element W X YZ
Electronic configuration2, 8, 12, 8, 72, 51
Answer the following questions based on the table above :
(i) What type of Bond is formed between :
1. W and X 2. Y and Z
(ii) What is the formula of the compound formed between :
1. X and Z 2. W and X

Solution

(i)
1. W has 1 electron extra whereas X needs 1 electron in order to attain the stable electronic configuration of its nearest inert gas. Hence, W will donate and X will accept electron resulting in an ionic bond.
2. Z has only 1 electron hence it needs 1 electron to attain the stable electronic configuration of its nearest inert gas whereas Y also needs 1 electron. Hence, both Y and Z will share their 1 electron with each other forming a covalent bond.

(ii)
1. The valency of X is -1 whereas that of Z is +1. Hence, ZX compound will be formed.
2. The valency of W is -1 whereas that of X is +1. Hence, XW compound will be formed.
