Question

The force between two ___________ masses is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

Solution

Newton's universal law of gravitation:

  1. It states that a point mass will attract another point mass with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
  2. Point mass does not mean that it's the mass of a point.
  3. If any object to be observed is smaller in shape and size than that of the distance between them then it is said to be a point mass.
  4. Point mass is used to neglect the shape and size of massive bodies while calculating the gravitational force acting between them.

Hence, the force between two point masses is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
