Unclassed forests

India’s forest resources have been classified into three categories- Reserved forests, Protected forests and Unclassed forests. More than half of the forest cover in India are reserved forests, and about one-third of the total forest area falls under the protected forests. Reserved and protected forests are also referred to as permanent forest estates. The remaining forest cover in the country comprises of the unclassed forests.
