Question

The frequency distribution of IQ (Intelligent Quotient) of 80 candidates is given below.
IQ 70-80 80-90 90-100 100-110 110-120 120-130 130-140
No. of candidates 7 16 20 17 11 7 2

Find the median IQ of the candidates.

Solution

For the calculation of median, we need to prepare the cumulative frequency distribution (less than type)
table as shown:
IQ No. of candidates Cumulative frequency (less than type)
70-80 7 7
80-90 16 23
90-100 20 43
100-110 17 60
110-120 11 71
120-130 7 78
130-140 2 80

Total frequency = fi = N =80N2 = 802 = 40So, cumulative frequency should be just greater than or equal to 40, i.e. 43.Therefore, the median class will be 90-100.Median = L+N2-c.f.hfHere, L = lower limit of the median class = 90c.f. = cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class = 23h = width of the median class = 10f = frequency of the median class = 20Median = 90+40-231020 = 90+8.5=98.5Median IQ of the candidates is 98.5.
