Question

The frequency of a car horn encountered a change from 400 Hz to 500 Hz, when the car approaches a vertical wall. If the speed of sound is 330 m/s. Then the speed of car is _____ km/h.

Solution

At first, the wall act as the observer.

Frequency received by wall,

f1=f0(v+v0vvs)=f0(vvv) ...(1)

Now, wall acts as a source.

Frequency received by observer on car,

f2=f1(v+v0vvs)=f1(v+vv) ...(2)

From (1) and (2),

f2=f0(v+vvv)

500=400(330+v330v)

v=1103 m/s=132 km/hr
