Solution

The correct option is B 1.77
For sonometer we know that frequency,
fTmgeff

or fgeff

When immersed in water:

Frequency in water, fw=0.8fair
geffg=f2wf2air=(0.8)2=0.64
Let, ρw= relative density of water =1,
ρm= relative density of mass,
and ρL= relative density of liquid

1ρwρm=0.64
ρwρm=0.36 (1)

When immersed in liquid:
Frequency in unknown liquid,
fL=0.6fw

geffg=(0.6)2=0.36

1ρLρm=0.36

ρLρm=0.64 (2)

From eqs. (1) and (2)

ρLρw=0.640.36

ρL=1.77

Why this question ?This question introduces the sonometer laws andits interpretation when the sonometer is immersedin two different liquids.
