Such fruits develop from tricarpellary, syncarpous, superior and trilocular ovary.
The type of placentation seen in these fruits is axile. The wall of such fruit bears tubercles (spines).
On maturity, the fruit breaks into lobules (by explosion mechanism) and get separated.
These separated lobules are known as cocci which are attached to a column called carpophore.
