Solution
The correct option is D
They suppress sperm motility and fertilising capacity of sperms
Mechanism of action of copper releasing IUDs :
Copper releasing IUDs releases copper ions in the uterus to suppress the motility of sperms so that they cannot swim and reach the fallopian tube for fertilisation. Copper ions also reduce the fertilising capacity of sperms and increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus.
Inhibition of ovulation :
Inhibition of ovulation is mediated by the intake of oral contraceptives which are pills containing hormonal combinations.
Inhibition of implantation :
The uterus is made unsuitable for implantation of the fertilised ovum by the action of hormones released by the hormone releasing IUDs. Besides, consumption of the oral contraceptives also inhibit implantation.
Final answer :
(d) They suppress sperm motility and fertilising capacity of sperms
