Once the egg and sperm has united, it results in the formation of zygote.
The zygote undergoes multiple divisions to form blastula, which gets embedded in the uterus. Now, the embryo undergoes process of gastrulation, forming the three germ layers as the endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. Next, placenta develops. Mesoderm also combines with trophoblast tissue to from the umbilical cord, which transports nutrients and wastes between fetal circulation and the placenta.
