Question

The g value on the two planets are 9.6 m/s2 and 3.2 m/s2 and their radii are 7200 km and 2400 km respectively. The ratio of escape velocities on two planets Ve1Ve2=x. Find the value of x.

Solution

The escape velocity from the surface of a planet of mass M and radius R is given by

Ve=2GMR

Ve=2GMR2×R

putting the value, g=GMR2

Ve=2gR

So, VegR

Ve1Ve2=g1g2×R1R2

Ve1Ve2=(9.63.2)×(72002400)=3×3

Ve1:Ve2=3:1

Accepted answers : 3 , 3.0 , 3.00

Why this question: To make students to understand the dependence of escape velocity on acceleration due to gravity and radius of a planet.
