The galvanometer shown in the figure has a resistance 50 Ω and full-scale deflection current 1 mA. What are the the resistances R1,R2 and R3 required to convert it into ammeter having ranges as indicated?
1198 Ω,122 Ω,1533 Ω
The maximum current in the galvonometer Ig, the resistance of the galvonometer r, the shunt resistance R, and the maximum current of the ammeter I are related as
R=rIIg−1
For the range I = 0.1 A,
R1+R2+R3=rIIg−1=50100−1=0.5Ω
For the range I = 1 A,
R1+R2=r+R3IIg−1=50+R31000−1
R1+R2+R3=0.5. Hence, R3<0.5⇒50+R3≃50
∴R1+R2=50+R31000−1≃0.05
For the range I = 10 A,
R1=r+R2+R3IIg−1=50+R2+R310000−1≃0.005Ω
R2=0.05−R1=0.05−0.005≃0.05Ω
R3=0.5−R1−R2=0.5−0.005−0.05≃0.5Ω
