Question

The gases are highly ______ due to large vacant spaces between the molecules of a gas.

Solution

  • Gases have large intermolecular spaces and negligible force of attraction between the particles.
  • They tend to flow and can be transferred from one container to another.
  • As they contain all three types of motion: translational, rotational, and vibrational.
  • So their kinetic energy is comparatively more than that of solids and liquids.
  • Gases have large intermolecular space so they can be compressed by applying pressure or by decreasing temperature.
  • On applying pressure gas-particle comes closer and gets compressed.
  • On decreasing temperature kinetic energy of particles decreases and as a result distance between particles decreases and gets compressed.

In solids and liquids distance between particles is less due to the strong intermolecular force of attraction so they cannot be compressed as compared to gases.

Thus, the gases are highly compressible due to large vacant spaces between the molecules of a gas.
