In case of oesophagus, the sub-mucosa also has certain glands which produce mucous secretions which line the oesophagus to lubricate the passageway. There are different gastric glands in different areas of the stomach. In stomach, the gastric glands are buried in the mucosa. Here, the mucosa has two layers:
  • Foveolar (leaf-like) layer- Superficial layer has surface mucous cells which secretes specially formulated mucus that coats the stomach and protect it from the action of HCl.
  • Another layer is glandular layer.
