Question

The general electronic configuration of d-block element is (n1)d110ns12, where n is the outer most shell. However, palladium does not follow this general electronic configuration. It has an electron configuration [Kr]364d105s0 in order to have stability. Give a reason behind it.

Solution

Reason for palladium(Pd) electronic configuration-
  • Full d orbitals are more stable than partially filled ones,
  • At higher energy levels, the levels are said to have degenerated which means that they have very close energies and then electrons can jump from one orbital to another very easily.
