Let the mean proportion be $x$
$\Rightarrow 2, x, 8$ are in continued proportion

$∴ 2 : x = x : 8$
$\Rightarrow x \times x = 8 \times 2$

$\Rightarrow x^{2} = 16$

$∴ x = 4$
