Solution

Magnetic compass:

  1. It is an instrument used to determine the direction of the earth's surface by taking the help of the earth's magnetic field.
  2. By default, the needle of the compass points in the north direction as per the earth's magnetic field.
  3. The north pole of the compass needle is marked with color. generally red
  4. When a bar magnet is brought near a compass, the magnetic field of the bar magnet gets aligned with the compass which deflects the compass needle either left or right based on the position of the poles.

When the North pole of a bar magnet is brought near the compass:

When the north pole of a bar magnet is brought near the compass the needle gets deflected left because the north pole of the magnet repels the north point of the needle and attracts the south pole of the needle.

When the South pole of a bar magnet is brought near the compass:

When the south pole of a bar magnet is brought near the compass the needle gets deflected right because the south pole of the magnet attracts the north point of the needle and repels the south pole of the needle.
