Question

The given figure shows infinitely long bent wires in the xy plane of paper and each carrying a current i. Here O is the origin. Co-ordinates of points P and Q are (2 m, 0) and (6 m, 0), respectively. Magnetic induction at P is given by αμ0i32π. Find the value of α.

Solution

Magnetic field at P is only due to wire segments AO and BQ for rest of the segments of wires , the point P lies on their axis. so magnetic field by them is zero at P.

B at P due to AO

BAO=(μ0i)4π(r)=(μ0i)4π(2) inwards

B at P due to BQ

BBQ=(μ0i)4π(r)=(π0i)4π(4) inwards

Since both fields are in same direction net magnetic field at P will be

BP=BAO+BBQ

BP=(3μ0i)16π

BP=(6μ0i)32π

Hence, α value is 6.
