Solution

The correct option is B

X always carries oxygen rich blood away from the heart whereas Y always carries carbon dioxide rich blood towards the heart.

  • X is an artery because it carries blood away from the heart and Y is a vein because it carries blood towards the heart.
  • First option is wrong, we studied one such exception to both artery and vein which carries deoxygenated blood and oxygenated blood respectively. Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lung and pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from lung to heart.
  • Second option is correct. Veins contain valves that ensure blood flows in only one direction. But, arteries don't require valves because pressure from the heart is so strong that blood is only able to flow in one direction.
  • Third option is also correct. If arteries are located superficially then there is a high possibility of their damage because of flow of blood at high pressure. To prevent this damage and blood loss, the arteries are deep-seated in the body and veins are superficially placed.
  • And the fourth option is also absolutely correct.
