If the egg does not get fertilized after ovulation, around 14th day, then the uterine lining is shed in the form of menses during the menstrual cycle which occurs every 28 days. If the egg is fertilized, the uterine lining grows in order to support the developing embryo.
In the diagram, the uterine wall thickness of woman Y starts decreasing after 14th day, meaning the egg has not been fertilized.
While, the wall thickness of woman X started increasing, meaning egg has been fertilized and she has conceived.
