When sewage is added to the river the conc. of X curve shows opposite bell curve to the conc. of Y curve which is bell shaped because sewage contains maximum amount of nitrogenous or ammonium compounds which is ingested slowly by the oxygen to decompose the sewage so the oxygen is consumed upstream to degrade nitrogenous compounds.
