The graph alongside represents a cooling curve for a substance being cooled from a higher temperature to a lower temperature.
Why is the region DE shorter than the region BC?

Solution
BC represents the change of state from vapour to liquid. So this is the region during when latent heat of vaporization is required. During DE the change takes place from liquid to solid where latent heat of fusion is required. Since latent heat of fusion is less than the latent heat of vapourization. Therefore, DE is shorter than BC.
