Question

The graph which shows variation of solubility with_____ is called a solubility curve.

Open in App
Solution

  • The maximum amount of a solute in grams which can be dissolved in 100 g of a solvent at a given temperature is called solubility.
  • Solubility of a substance depends on

(a) nature of the solute,

(b) nature of the solvent and

(c) temperature.

  • For most of the substances the solubility increases with increase in temperature. However the solubility of some substances decreases with temperature and in the case of some substances the temperature has no effect on the solubility.
  • The curve line drawn on a graph by showing the relation between temperature ( on the X axis )and solubility( on the Y axis) of the substance at different temperature is called a solubility curve.
  • A graphical relationship between the solubility and temperature is termed as the solubility curve.
  • Solubility curve is used

(a) to determine the solubility of different substances at different temperature,

(b ) Solubility of solutes can be compared and

(c ) it is possible to know the preferential precipitation of different salts during the fractional crystallization process.

The graph which shows variation of solubility with temperature is called solubility curve.
