Great Granary was found at Mohen-jo daro, while six small granaries were found at Harappa. The site belongs to the mature Harappan phase from 2600 BCE to 2000 BC. The largest building discovered at Mohenjodaro is Great Granary .

Indus Valley Civilization

  • Mohenjodaro and Harappa are two important and major sites of Indus Valley Civilization. Mohenjodaro was to the South of the Indus river and Harappa was to the North of the Indus river.
  • Harappa and Mohenjodaro are currently located in Pakistan.
  • Some of the Important sites of Indus Valley Civilization which are located in India are Kalibangan and Balathal in Rajasthan, Dholavira and Lothal in Gujarat, Ropar in the Punjab, Rakhigarhi in Haryana etc.

Important Discoveries – Indus Valley Civilization

Some of the important discoveries of Indus Valley Civilization are given below:

  • One of the earliest civic planning can be found in Mohenjodaro and Harappa.
  • In grid like patterns there were many structures such as offices, storage facilities, public baths, houses, markets etc.
  • The stone statuaries were found at Mohenjodaro and Harappa. In stone were 2 male figures, one was interpreted as a priest.
  • Bronze statues were found, which were made using ‘lost wax technique.’ Dancing girl was a popular bronze statue of human that was found, there are bronze statues of humans as well.
  • Bronze figure of a Bull was found at Kalibangan in Rajasthan.
  • Terracotta images of Gods and Goddesses were found at Indus Valley Civilization.
  • Toy carts were found at the Indus Valley civilization.
  • Archaeologists were able to unearth thousands of seals, figures of elephants, goat, unicorn bull, tiger, rhinoceros, buffalo, bison etc.
  • A very significant seal that was discovered was the Pashupati seal as per some scholars, some decipher it as a female deity.
  • The seals that were discovered were made of steatite, copper, terracotta, chert, agate, ivory, gold.
  • Every seal had a pictographic script which has not been deciphered yet.
  • Many potteries were discovered at Indus Valley civilization, they came in different sizes and shapes.
  • Many types of beads and ornaments were found at Indus Valley Civilization. There were finger-rings, necklaces, armlets, fillets, earrings, anklets, girdles. They were made of gemstones and precious metals.
  • Fire altars were found at Kalibangan and Lothal.
  • Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Lothal had elaborate store houses.
  • Cities were divided into two or more parts. The West part was higher but smaller, these are known as Citadels. The larger and lower part of the city is known as the lower town.
  • These citadels had special structures known as the Great Bath, for example, it was found in Mohenjodaro.
