Haloarene or aryl halide is a chemical compound containing arenes, where one or more hydrogen atoms are bonded to the aromatic ring are replaced with halogens. They are generally denoted by “Ar-X” where 'X' denotes the halogen atom attached and 'Ar' stands for the aryl group.
The halide ions, which are electron-withdrawing but ortho, para directing, are the exception.
Halogen attached to a benzene ring is somewhat deactivating due to it's -I-effect, as a result it tends to withdraw the electrons from the benzene ring, making electrophilic substitution, ortho/ para directors are positively charged so halogens, being ortho/ para directors, are positively charged.
