In 1806, military General Agnew introduced a new turban which resembled a European hat with a cross on it. This was popularly known as ‘Agnew’s turban’. Both Hindu and Muslim soldiers opposed it. And when the soldiers opposed it, they were severely punished by the English. This became the immediate cause of the Vellore Revolt.
