Question

The height of a mercury column in a barometer at a place is 74 cm. If a liquid of density 5.44 g cm3 is used then find the height of the liquid column.

Solution

Let the pressure be P, so pressure P will be same for both liquid.
Now P=ρmercurygh, here h is given as 74 cm
For other liquid P=ρliquidgH, H is height of liquid column.
Now equating both equations,
P=ρmercurygh=ρliquidgH
13.6×74=5.44×H
H=185cm
