Question

The height of a mercury column in a barometer in a Calcutta library was recorded to be 75cm.Calculate this pressure in SI and CGS units using the following data : Specific gravity of mercury = 13.6,Density of water = 103 kg/m3,g = 9.8 m/s2 at Calcutta .Pressure = hpg in usual symbols.

Solution

Dear student,
For finding values in SI unit, convert all into metres, seconds and kilograms.
so, 75 cm is written as 75/100=0.75m
Pressure=pgh
Density(p) =specific gravity × density of water=13.6×1000 kg/m³
=13600kg/m³
g=9.8m/s²
Pressure=13600×9.8×0.75
=99960 N/m²(Pascal).

In cgs system, take every unit in centimeters,gram and seconds.
Density of Mercury=13600kg/m³= 13600×1000/(10²)³
=13.6g/cm³
g=9.8m/s =9.8×100cm/s²
=980cm/s²
Height=75cm
pressure in cgs=13.6×980×75
=999600 g/cms²
Thank you.
