The height of sand in a cylindrical-shaped can drops 3 inches when 1 cubic foot of sand is poured out. What is the diameter, in inches, of the cylinder ?
(a) 24√π (b) 48√π
(c) 32√π (d) 48√π
Let h be the height and d be the diameter of a cylinder, then
Radius =d2,volume=π(d2)2h
∴Volume=14πd2h
Now let us take h =1 foot. Then volume of sand with height of 1 foot becomes 14πd2.1
If height is 3 inches or 14ft. dropped, then
Volume of sand = [14πd214 ]
→1=116πd2⇒d2=16π
⇒d=√16π=4√πft.
∴d=4×12√π inches
∴Diameter=48π inches
