Question

The human ear can detect continuous sounds in the frequency range from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Assuming that the speed of sound in air is 330ms1 for all frequencies, calculate the wavelengths corresponding to the given extreme frequencies of the audible range.

Solution

Speed of sound in air v=330 m/s
Wavelength of sound wave λ=vν
where ν is the frequency of sound wave.
Minimum frequency heard by human ear νmin=20 Hz
So, maximum wavelength of sound wave λmax=vνmin
λmax=33020=16.5 m
Maximum frequency heard by human ear νmax=20 kHz=20000 Hz
So, minimum wavelength of sound wave λmin=vνmax
λmin=33020000=16.5×103 m=16.5 mm
