Question

The human heart forces 4500 cc of blood per min through the arteries, under a pressure of 15 cm of Hg. Calculate the hp of the heart.
Take 1 hp = 746 W and g = 980 cm/s2.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

The volume of blood pumped per minute is, V=4500cubiccentimeter=0.0045cubicmeter

Time is t=1min=60sec

Pressure is, P=15cmHg=19998.36Pa[1cmHg=1333.2239Pa]

Step 2: Calculating power

Power is given as,

Power=P×Vt

where P is pressure, V is volume and t is time.

Substituting the known values, we get,

Power=19998.36Pa×0.0045cubicmeter60sec=1.499877W=2.0×10-3hp[1hp=746W]

Therefore, the power of the heart is 2.0×10-3hp
