In the vapour state, BeCl2 exists as a monomer. It does not exist as a dimer/polymer.

Hence it is in the linear shape: Cl-Be-Cl

Here, the central atom is sp hybridized.

In the solid state,BeCl2 has a polymeric structure, whereeach Be atom is linked with 4Cl atoms.Each Chlorine atom is covalently bonded to one Be atom while one of the lone pairs of this Chlorine atom forms a coordinate covalent bond with another Be atom. Hence, Be atom is in sp3 hybridized where two empty orbitals and two half-filled orbitals undergo hybridization.
