MHPO₄ contains two ions ; $M^{2+}andHP{O_4}^{2-}$
Since both are divalent ions they form the $1:1$compound $MHP{O}_4$

But when we take Cl ion, it is monovalent.
So, the ions will be $M^{2+}andC{l}^{-}$.Thus, when $M^{2+}$ combines with $C{l}^{-}$, the compound formed will be $MC{l}_2$
