Solution

The correct option is A Both A and C are correct.
Solution: Option D

Say: Let’s read the question and observe the image.

Ask:
How many butterflies are inside the box?
Ans: 4

How many are outside?
Ans: 12

What is the total number of butterflies?
Ans: 16

How will you represent the image based on the number of butterflies inside and outside the box?
Ans: 4 + 12 = 16

Do you think only option C is correct then? Why?
Ans: No, option A is also correct, because the same numbers, 4 and 12, are added to make 16, but in a different order.

Hence, option D is the correct answer.

WB: If required, use the whiteboard to draw the number frame and write the equation.

Probing Question:
Q: Why do you think option B is incorrect?
A: In option B, both addends are equal, but as per the image, the number of butterflies inside and outside the box is different. Though the total is correct, the representation of the equation with respect to the addends is incorrect.
