Question

THE INCREASING STABILITY OF THE PEROXIDE OR SUPEROXIDE,AS THE SIZE OF THE METAL ION INCRASES, IS DUE TO THE?? STABILIZATION?? OF THE LARGE ANION BY LARGER CATIONS THROUGH LATTICE ENERGY EFFECTS .What does this mean ?Explain in simple words.

Solution

Dear student,

The size of the ions increases as we move down the group. Thus, larger the size of the cation, more is its ability to stabilize the anions of larger size (that is interaction between ions of same size is more). The peroxides and superoxides are anions of large size. Therefore, they can be easily stabilized by larger size such as K+, Rb+, Cs+ etc. The size of the ions increases as we move down the group. Hence, for group I cations, as we proceed down the group, the stability of peroxides and superoxides increases.
