Question

The initial pressure and volume of a given mass of a gas (CpCv=γ) are P0 and V0 The gas can exchnage heat with the surrounding,

(a) It is slowely comproessed to a volume V02 and then suddenly compressed to V04. Find the final presure.

(b) If the gas is suddenly compressed from the volume V0 to V02 and then slowly compressed to V04, what will be the final pressure ?

Solution

Given, CpCv=γ

P0 ( Initial pressure), V0 (Initial volume)

(a) (i) Isothermal compression,

P1V1=P2V2

or P0V0=P2V02P2=2P0

(ii) Adiabatic compression

P1V1γ=P2V2γ

or 2P0(V02)γ=P2(V04)γ

P2=Vγ02γ×2P0×4γVγ0

= 2γ×2P0=P02γ+1

(b) (i) Adiabatic compression

P1V1γ=P2Vγ2

or P0Vγ0=PVγ1

P=P02γ

(ii) Isothermal compression

P1V1=P2V2

2γP0×V02=P"(Vo2)

P"=P02γ×2

=P02γ+1
