Solution
The process of removing insoluble solids from a liquid by using filter paper is known as filtration.
The solid which remains behind on the filter paper is called the residue. The liquid which passes through the filter paper is called the filtrate.
For example - the mixture of chalk particles and water can be separated by the process of filtration.
When the mixture is passed through the filter paper. Water can travel through the tiny pores of filter paper, but solid particles of chalk cannot pass through the filter paper.
Hence, chalk particles will be left behind on the filter paper as residue, and water will be filtered out as filtrate.
Hence, the insoluble solid left behind on the filter paper during filtration is called the residue.
