The integral enthalpies of solution of anhydrous $C u S O_{4} (s)$ and hydrated $C u S O_{4} .5 H_{2} O (s)$ are $- 70 k J$ and $10 k J$ per mol respectively. Determine the magnitude of enthalpy of hydration of $0.1$ mole anhydrous $C u S O_{4} (s)$ as :

$C u S O_{4} (s) + 5 H_{2} O ⟶ C u S O_{4} .5 H_{2} O$ .

Solution

Total enthalpy of hydration in magnitude is $(- 70 - 10 = - 80)$ 80 kJ/mole so for 0.1 mole magnitude of enthalpy of hydration is $80 \times 0.1 = 8 k J$ .
