The intensity, at the central maxima (O) in a Young's double slit set up is I0. If the distance OP equals one third of the fringe width of the pattern, show that the intensity, at point P, would equal I2/4.

Intensity at the central maxima=I0
Distance OP is one-third of the fringe width, x=13β(given)
Fringe width is given by
λDd
x=λD3d
Path difference, Δp=xdD and,
Phase difference, ϕ=2πλ(ΔP)=2π3
Intensity at point P,
I=I0cos2ϕ2=I0cos2(2π3)=I04
Hence proved.
