Question

The ion of chlorine is?

Open in App
Solution

When any atom or molecule gains or loses an electron to gain stability then an ion is formed. An ion can have a positive or negative electric charge.

For example:

Na(s)Na+(aq)+e-sodiumcation (loss of electron)

Cl(s)+e-Cl-(aq)chlorideion (gain of an electron)

As chlorine is said to be the halogen family member. Therefore to attain stable electronic configuration chlorine will gain one electron.

So the ion of chlorine will be chloride (Cl-).
