Question

The ionisation potential value of K is less than that of Na. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The removal of an electron from the valence shell of a neutral gaseous atom requires energy which is termed as the ionization energy or ionization potential.
Due to the greater size of K as compared to Na, the electrostatic attraction due to the nucleus is reduced in K. So the energy required to remove an electron from the outermost shell of K is less than that of Na.
