This layer forms irregular folds called rugae in the stomach. The small intestine is divided into three parts. The C- shaped structure of the small intestine is called duodenum. The hepatopancreatic ampulla (ampulla of Vater) opens into the duodenum. The point where the ampulla of Vater opens into the duodenum is called the papilla of Vater. The finger-like projections in the small intestine are called villi and they increase the surface area for the absorption of food.
