Question

The Ka Xrays of aluminium (Z=13) and zinc (Z=30) have wavelength 887 pm and 146 pm respectively. Use Moseley's law v=a(Zb) to find the wavelength of the Ka Xray of iron (Z=26)

Open in App
Solution

Wavelength of Ka x-rays of Al

λ1=887pm

Va=cλ

Va=3×108887×1012

=33.82×1016Hz

For zinc

λ2=146pm

vz=3×108146×1012

vz=2.055×1018Hz

According to Moseley’s law

v=a(Zb)

For Aluminium:

5.815×108=a(30b)....................(1)

for Zinc:

1.4331×109=a(30b)...................(2)

Dividing (1) by (2) we get

13b30b=5.815×1011.4331

Onsolving,

b=1.3949

&a=5×107

forFe

ν=5×107(261.39)

=123.05×107
