Question

The KP value for the reaction H2(g)+I2(g)2HI(g) at 460 oC is 49. If the initial pressure of H2 and I2 is 0.5 atm respectively, determine the partial pressure of H2 in atm at equilibrium.(give your answer upto 2 decimal)

Solution

According to the given reaction,

H2+I22HIInitial pressure0.50.50At equilibrium(0.5x)(0.5x)2x(from stoichiometry of equation)

using the formula,
KP=P2HIPH2×PI2
49=(2x)2(0.5x)2
x=0.39 atm
Pressure of H2 at equilibrium =(0.5x)=0.11 atm
