Question

The kinetic energy of the electron present in the first orbit of an atom is ____ than that of the electron in the last orbit.

Solution

  1. The electrons closest to the nucleus have the lowest potential energy, but the highest kinetic energy.
  2. The electrons further away from the nucleus are weakly held by the nucleus and they can be removed by giving less amount of energy.
  3. But the electrons closer to the nucleus can only be removed by providing a greater amount of energy. Thus it has higher kinetic energy.

Hence, the kinetic energy of the electron present in the first orbit of an atom is more than that of the electron in the last orbit.
