Question

The label on the bottle of H2O2 solution reads as '10 volume'.
Find the concentration of H2O2 expressed in percentage by volume (in nearest integer). The density of H2O2 is 1.463 g/mL.

Solution

1 volume of H2O2 will give off 10 volumes of O2 at STP.
The equation is: 2H2O22H2O+O2.
10 litres correspond to 0.409 moles of O2.
Therefore, the moles of H2O2 are 0.818 = 27.812 g of H2O2.
The density of H2O2 is 1.463 g/mL, so 27.78 grams is about 19.0 mL or 0.019 L.
Therefore, the percentage by volume is 0.019×1001=1.9 % by volume.
So, the nearest integer is 2%.
