Shah Alam II was the sixteenth Mughal Emperor who ruled from 1759 to 1806. He was also known as Ali Gauhar. After Shujāʿ al-Dawlah’s defeat at Buxar in 1764, Shah ʿĀlam became the company’s pensioner, in return for which he granted the British the right to collect revenue from Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
