Question

The length and the breadth of three rectangles are as follows:

(a) 9m and 6m

(b) 17m and 3m

(c) 4m and 14m

Which one has the largest area and which one has the smallest?

Solution

Step 1: Find the area of first rectangle

The area A of the rectangle with length l and width w is given by, A=l×w.

According to the question

Substituting 9 for l and 6 for w into A=l×w, we get

Area1=9×6=54m2

Step 2: Find the area of second rectangle

The area A of the rectangle with length l and width w is given by, A=l×w.

According to the question

Substituting 17 for l and 3 for w into A=l×w, we get

Area2=17×3=51m2

Step 3: Find the area of third rectangle

The area A of the rectangle with length l and width w is given by, A=l×w.

According to the question

Substituting 4 for l and 14 for w into A=l×w, we get

Area3=4×14=56m2

Hence, the rectangle having length and breadth 4m and 14m has the largest area whereas the rectangle having length and breadth 17m and 3m has the smallest area.
