Let x be the desired length.
Potential gradient in the first case =E0l
E=(l3)(E0l)=E03 .....(i)
Potential gradient in the second case.
=E03l/2=2E03l
E=(x)2E03l .....(ii)
From equations (i) and (ii), we get
E03=(2E03l)x
x=l2
